Thane Road highway works plan – PHASE 1
Construction works to improve congestion along Thane Road heading towards the ring road have now been completed.
The Government-funded works has widened the road by slightly moving the existing southern footpath to enable an additional traffic lane to be introduced on Thane Road between Bull Close Road and the mini-roundabout. This has been done to increase junction capacity meaning traffic can pass through more efficiently and reduce traffic queues, especially at peak times.
This now provides a dedicated right turn approach lane into the mini-roundabout for traffic heading towards the Ring Road and A453.
As part of the new footpath alignment, a new smooth surface has been provided and lighting columns moved out of the way to create a new shared-use unobstructed facility for pedestrians and cyclists; continuing the programme of infrastructure improvements to accommodate increasing levels of cycling.
This is the first phase of a scheme that will also provide a new bus lane along Thane Road between the main access into Boots (from the City) and Bull Close Road.
For Phase II, the project team have been
- Working with adjacent landowners to secure land agreements to widen the road to the north, providing a new pavement and traffic lane to accommodate the new bus lane.
- Detailed design has been completed and consultation has concluded on the traffic proposals to provide a dedicated bus lane and introduce a new 20mph speed limit to link up with the existing limit along the ‘new’ section of Thane Road that links to Beeston.
- Geotechnical surveys are currently in progress to help determine the construction methodology and confirm there are no environmental issues given the history of the site.
- Utility Companies have been engaged to identify underground services that need to be moved or protected to accommodate road widening.
Next Steps:-
- Ground and geotechnical surveys and monitoring
- Land agreements to be finalised
- Develop a programme of construction works including temporary traffic management arrangements
- Engage with local businesses and stakeholders
- Contractor mobilisation and vegetation clearance (after bird nesting season has ended)
Work is expected to begin autumn 2024 and be complete during summer 2025. More information about the programme will be issued here when agreed and confirmed.
About Transforming Cities
In 2020, Nottingham and Derby City Councils were successful in securing unprecedented funding from the Department of Transport’s Transforming Cities fund when they were awarded £161m for a huge programme of transport improvements.
The joint bid was the only one in the country to secure the full amount requested from the DfT. All the schemes meet key TCF objectives: Supporting commuting, employment, development and economic growth
This scheme is part of an ongoing package of enhancements along the Southern Growth Corridor designed to serve existing employment sites and to cater for the travel demand predicted from new housing, employment and leisure developments along the corridor. Later phases include proposals for a new eastbound bus lane from Boots to the A52 / Queens Drive Park and Ride site providing new bus priority measures and enhancing links to existing bus based park and ride sites with further cycle links improvements incorporating new pedestrian connectivity measures to businesses and facilities along Thane Road.
