In 2021, the council successfully bid as part of a competitive process for £18 million from the Government’s Levelling Up fund to deliver the ‘Renewing Local Streets’ transport programme.
This work will improve streets and local town centres and make walking and cycling easier and safer. The programme consists of three main projects:
Across all 20 wards our transport teams have been upgrading pavements and paths to make them safer, especially taking into consideration the needs of older people and those with less mobility. They have also been making repairs to roads and cycle paths to help improve traffic flow and safety.
- School Streets
Building on the existing schemes funded through the Active Travel Fund, The School Streets programme aims to introduce measures to encourage more walking, scooting and cycling to schools, and make areas around school entrances safer, with less traffic and more inviting approach routes.
- Greener Streets – LED lights and Electric Vehicle Charging Points
The Greener Streets programme includes delivery of a city-wide upgrade of our street lighting to replace around 34,000 lamps with modern LEDs. The new LED streetlights are more energy efficient and save money by reducing maintenance costs and using less electricity. The programme also includes expanding our network of community electric vehicle charging points, with a focus on serving residential areas that have limited off-street parking.
