St Ann’s Well Road cycle lane progress

St Ann's Well Road

Work on Active Travel England-funded improvements to St Ann’s Well Road are progressing well and on track to be completed by spring 2024.

Parts of the new cycle lane are already complete and open, with cyclists and scooter users able to use them while works continue on the rest of the scheme.

The Government-funded project features a stepped cycle lane separating cyclists from car users in a vital new link on Nottingham’s cycle network serving people in St Ann’s as well as those cycling through this area and onward to the city, Mapperley or Sherwood.

The project will also see junctions re-aligned and upgrades to traffic calming features to reduce vehicle speeds in this area, making walking, cycling and scooting more attractive and contributing to improving air quality and meeting Nottingham’s 2028 carbon-neutral objective.

The new active travel lane was first added in the immediate aftermath of the Covid pandemic and has proved very popular with local people.

This will add to the safe, segregated cycle network around the city, with the east-west cycle route – where a cycle path is currently being built on London Road roundabout before works move to Bellar Gate – as well as a future scheme on Porchester Road. A consultation on this is due to begin later this year.

Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Highways, Transport and Planning, Councillor Angela Kandola, said: “I’m pleased at the progress we’ve made so far on our work to introduce a fully segregated new cycle lane along St Ann’s Well Road, and it’s great to see local people already using it.

“The new cycle lane and traffic-calming measures will make a real difference to the safety and journeys of pedestrians, cyclists and scooters along this route, as well as tackling congestion and improving air quality.”

This project is funded by the Active Travel Fund and aims to help more people cycle safely to school, the shops or other local journeys.
